Today’s school lunch: rice, teriyaki chicken, jako (tiny baby fish) and bell pepper stir-fry, and potato miso soup.

I thought it about it and I realized that even though I’ve been in Japan for nearly two years, this is probably the first time I’ve eaten teriyaki chicken. Teriyaki chicken is one of the quintessential Japanese dishes in America, but I rarely see or notice it on the menus in Japan.

Today is Saturday and it’s open school. For lunch, I went to a soba restaurant that a student recommended.

Prefer my soba just a tad softer (was too al dente/undercooked) and with more tsuyu dipping sauce. They mathematically measure the exact amount. There wasn’t a drop more. The side was deep-fried soba noodles with a light dusting of powder sugar.

Today’s school lunch: rice, mabo tofu, pickled cucumber with cuttlefish with a slight sesame oil sauce, and kashiwamochi (rice cake wrapped in an oak leaf).

Teacher A came into the room, got his lunch, but just stood there staring at Teacher B. We were wondering what was going on. Teacher A then looked at his plate of pickles. So Teacher B took Teacher A’s plate of pickles off his tray. Teacher A then said “Oh?! You want that? Please help yourself!” with a big smile on his face. And then left the lunch room without his plate of pickles.

As I was finishing eating, another teacher gave me his asparagus. The teachers at this school are sure a lot more open about their dislikes. Usually, we have to sneak off and toss food away when no one is looking. We’re encouraged to eat EVERYTHING off our plates. Have not, waste not. I eat everything but I’m blunt about what I like and what I don’t like. So they think I’m a picky bastard. I am. But I still eat everything.

One teacher gave me his wings since he hates them. Great for me cuz I love wings! They’re not buffalo wings, but nothing a little sriracha chili sauce can’t fix. My VP came in the lunch room and saw my bottle of sriracha and exclaimed, “出た～ (There it is)!” He then asked me if I had soy sauce for my rice too. I told him I don’t have any soy sauce on me.
